110th Anniversary event

On Thursday 3 April 2008 the Supporters Club 'unveiled' a blue plaque to mark the 110th anniversary of the founding of Portsmouth Football Club.

“On April 5, six businessmen and sportsmen met at 12, High Street, Portsmouth, formed themselves into a syndicate and decided to buy almost five acres of agricultural land close to Goldsmith Avenue for £4,950. The six who took that momentous decision were: John Brickwood, later Sir John, head of Brickwood’s Brewery, who became the Club’s first chairman. Alfred H Bone, an architect and surveyor, whose professional qualities were to prove invaluable to the initial development of Fratton Park. John Wyatt Peters, a local wine importer. William Wiggington, a successful Government contractor. George Lewin Oliver, founder of one of Portsmouth’s best known private schools. The sixth man at the meeting was solicitor John Edward Pink, who was initially company solicitor and later joined the board.”

(From “Pompey: The History of Portsmouth Football Club” Mike Neasom et al. 1984)

Representatives of the Supporters Club, the Football Club and others met at the building at 3 pm, and then retired to the Newcome Arms for drinks.

12 High Street is currently undergoing refurbishment, so it was not possible to fix the plaque permanently until this work is completed, but it is hoped that once the work is completed the plaque will be installed for all to see, to commemorate that first meeting.
